After studying Music at the University of Tasmania for 5 years, Shane embarked upon a professional career as guitarist and educator. He performed in a variety of funk, soul, jazz and big bands, touring the Apple Isle. He was also engaged to play for Gershwin, Cole Porter and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical productions.Shane moved to Melbourne in the 90s,  and became sought after by some of the more prominent funk, soul & r'n b Bands in the city, such as Funken Wagnels, Rev. Funk & The Horns of Salvation (led by a former member of Grand Wazoo), Wolfgram and Slyde. With them, he toured up and down the east coast of Australia.
